A comprehensive analysis titled “Assessment of Hafir’s systems in Sudan: Technical, Socio-Economic and Environmental Aspects” was commissioned by UNICEF – Sudan and executed by UNESCO Category II Regional Center for Capacity Building and Research in Water Harvesting (RCWH) in collaboration with (Water Harvesting Administration, Dams Implementation Unit (DIU) ) . The aim was to assess the Hafir systems being constructed during the period 2010 – 2018 by the DIU in terms of the problems encountered by them and is impeding their functionality.
The assessment was conducted based on desk top review; surveys of households, focus groups of professionals, contractors, government and women in 5 representative States namely: Blue Nile, North Darfur, North Kordofan, White Nile and Gadarif. A total of 61 Hafirs were assessed and a total number of more than 1000 interviews were conducted.
Objectives:
The main objective of this seminar was to provide an overview of this study for discussion with the experts at the Ministry of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity (MWRIE)to take their comments and observations into account to enhance the study outcomes .Tow papers were presented about the study and the final output of the study ( National strategy for effective management of hafir system)
